Cold Chain Logistics Guide for India

How a complete cold chain works in India — from pack-house to last-mile — and the engineering decisions at each stage.

    The 5 cold chain stages

    (1) Pre-cooling at farm/processing: removes field heat within 4 hours of harvest. (2) Bulk cold storage: holds product at optimum temperature. (3) Reefer transport: maintains temperature in-transit. (4) Distribution / break-bulk hub. (5) Last-mile to retail / consumer. A break of >2 hours at any stage typically halves remaining shelf life.

    Pre-cooling methods

Hydro-cooling (water 0–1°C, 30–60 min): leafy vegetables, sweet corn, broccoli. Forced-air pre-cooling (cold air 0–2°C through stacked boxes, 4–8 hr): berries, mushrooms, mangoes. Vacuum cooling (15–30 min): leafy greens, lettuce, mushrooms — fastest method, highest CAPEX. Room cooling (in storage chamber, 24–48 hr): slowest, only acceptable for low-respiration commodities like apples or root vegetables.

    Reefer transport

Multi-temperature reefer trucks dominate Indian long-haul: ±0.5°C control, GPS + temperature telematics with cloud logging (FSSAI mandate for dairy & frozen since 2021). Pre-cool truck to setpoint 30 min before loading. Never load warm product into a reefer — the truck unit is sized for steady-state, not for pull-down. Door open time per stop: <90 seconds.

    Pack-house

A modern pack-house integrates: receiving dock with insulated rapid-roll doors, sorting/grading line, washing & drying, pre-cooling, packaging, and cold storage hand-off — all under one temperature-controlled envelope. Pack-house standard for export-grade horticulture is APEDA-compliant (ISO 22000 + GAP).

    Last-mile

Insulated boxes with PCM (phase-change material) packs for 4–24 hour delivery windows. EV cold trucks with battery-driven refrigeration are emerging in tier-1 cities — payload 500–2000 kg, range 80–150 km. Cold-vending lockers for B2C dairy / meat delivery in apartment complexes.

    Compliance & validation

FSSAI (Food Safety): temperature & humidity logs for 12 months, third-party audit annually. WHO GDP (pharma): 9-point temperature mapping at empty, partial, and full load; mean-kinetic-temperature reporting; calibrated sensors with NABL certificate every 12 months. APEDA: export pack-house certification. Refrigerant compliance: Kigali Amendment phase-down, PESO licensing for ammonia >100 kg.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the biggest cold chain gap in India?

Pre-cooling — over 80% of post-harvest fruits/vegetables in India go directly into long-distance transport without pre-cooling, causing 30–40% losses before retail.

    Is GPS temperature logging mandatory?

Yes for FSSAI Schedule 4 (dairy, frozen, fish) and for all pharma cold chain per CDSCO 2023 guidelines.
