PUF Panel Technical Guide for Cold Rooms

Engineering specifications for PUF (polyurethane foam) sandwich panels used in cold rooms — what to specify and what to reject.

    Core foam specification

    Density 40 ± 2 kg/m³. Compressive strength ≥ 1.8 kg/cm². Closed-cell content ≥ 90%. Thermal conductivity (k-value) ≤ 0.022 W/m·K at 10°C. Water absorption ≤ 2% by volume. Fire rating Class 1 (BS 476 Part 7) or B-s2,d0 (EN 13501-1). Insist on a third-party test report (TÜV, Intertek, NABL-accredited lab) — densities below 38 kg/m³ delaminate, shrink, and lose insulation value within 3 years.

    Thickness selection

    60 mm: chiller rooms +2 to +10°C. 80 mm: standard cold storage 0 to +5°C. 100 mm: freezer rooms 0 to -18°C. 125 mm: deep freezers -18 to -25°C. 150 mm: blast freezers and IQF -25 to -40°C, also for ambient-tropical sites above 45°C peak. U-values: 60 mm = 0.367, 80 mm = 0.275, 100 mm = 0.220, 125 mm = 0.176, 150 mm = 0.147 W/m²·K (assuming k = 0.022).

    Skin selection

PPGL (pre-painted galvalume, 0.5–0.6 mm): standard for general cold storage, food-safe coating. GI (galvanised iron, 0.5 mm): cheaper, used for back-of-house or industrial cold rooms. SS304 (0.6 mm): required for pharma, dairy, meat & seafood processing — meets FSSAI direct-contact norms. SS316 (0.6 mm): chlorinated or high-salinity environments (coastal seafood). Aluminium (0.7 mm): IBR / clean-room applications. Always specify both internal and external skin separately.

    Joint system

Cam-lock with EPDM gasket — the only joint that maintains long-term vapour seal in the field. The cam-lock should engage at 4–6 points per panel edge with stainless eccentric hooks. Reject tongue-and-groove-only joints, foam-in-place joints (impossible to service), and adhesive-only joints. Verify the cam-lock spacing on a sample panel before order.

    Vapour barrier

On rooms below 0°C, the warm-side skin doubles as the vapour barrier — every penetration (cable entry, conduit, sensor) must be sealed with closed-cell foam + butyl tape. A 1 mm hole on a -20°C wall admits enough vapour to form a 5 kg ice block inside the panel core within 18 months, destroying the insulation. Include vapour-seal inspection in the AMC checklist.

    Panel sizing & layout

Standard panel widths: 600 / 800 / 1000 / 1150 mm. Standard lengths: up to 12 m. Plan the panel layout to minimise joints over door openings and equipment penetrations. Corner panels (interior) prevent the 'cold bridge' that plain butt joints create. Floor panels need anti-skid checker-plate top skin for forklift-traffic rooms.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use EPS or thermocol instead of PUF?

EPS has 60% higher thermal conductivity and absorbs moisture aggressively — viable only for ambient-temperature insulation, not cold rooms.

How long do PUF panels last?

20+ years with proper vapour seal and no mechanical damage. Most panel failures in India come from forklift impact and unsealed cable entries, not foam degradation.
