Quick answer
Cold room doors come in four main types: hinged doors for walk-ins and trolley traffic, manual or motorised sliding doors for wide pallet and forklift openings, double-acting traffic doors for frequent passage, and strip or air curtains as secondary barriers. Freezer doors also need heater frames, a pressure relief port and an inside safety release.
Key takeaways
- HyperCold builds each door to the room's panel thickness; rate-card door prices run from ₹18,375 (60 mm) to ₹38,745 (150 mm), GST extra.
- Below 0 °C a heated frame is essential, or the gasket freezes to the frame and tears.
- A pressure relief port stops a freezer door from being held shut by the vacuum that forms when warm air that entered cools and contracts.
- For wheeled traffic, plan about 300 mm of clearance on each side of the widest load: roughly 1.6 m clear for a 1,000 mm pallet on a hand pallet truck.
- A PVC strip curtain costs ₹8,925 per door and an air curtain ₹26,250 per unit on HyperCold's FY2026-27 rate card, GST extra.
What are the main types of cold room doors?
| Door type | Typical use | Strengths | Watch-outs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hinged (swing) insulated door | Walk-in chillers and freezers; people with crates or trolleys | Tightest seal, simplest hardware, lowest cost | Needs swing space outside; heavy leaves sag on undersized hinges |
| Manual sliding door | Wide openings for pallet trucks; rooms with no swing space | Wide clear opening, nothing swings into the aisle | Track and rollers need a level floor and regular upkeep |
| Motorised sliding door | Forklift traffic and frequent openings | Opens by pull cord, button or sensor and closes every time | Higher cost; needs power, safety sensors and service |
| Double-acting traffic door | Ante rooms, processing areas, frequent trolley passage | Push-through and self-closing | Weaker seal; not a primary freezer door |
| Strip or air curtain | Behind the main door | Cuts infiltration while the door is open | Strips tear and cloud; air curtains need correct set-up |
High-speed roll-up doors are also used on busy loading docks, often paired with an insulated sliding door that is closed out of hours.
Should you choose a hinged or sliding cold room door?
Choose a hinged door when traffic is on foot or by hand trolley and there is space for the leaf to swing outward: it seals on all four sides against a compression gasket and is the default on walk-in rooms. Choose a sliding door when the opening must be wider than a single hinged leaf can manage (roughly 1.2 m), when pallet trucks or forklifts pass, or when a swinging leaf would block an aisle. Motorise it when drivers would otherwise dismount many times a shift, because a door left open is the largest single infiltration leak in the room.
Selection checks:
- Hinged doors open outward and have a self-closer or rising hinges
- Corrosion-resistant hardware in wash-down rooms
- Kick plates and bump protection where pallet trucks pass
- Vision panels only in heated glass on freezers, or they fog and frost
- Door placed so the evaporator does not blow cold air straight out of the opening
How thick should a cold room door be?
A door is a hole in the insulation, so HyperCold builds it to the same PUF thickness as the room's panels and prices it by that thickness. The configurator includes one door per room at the rate for the room's panel:
| Door and panel thickness | Configurator room types | Room temperature | Door price (rate card) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 60 mm | Light cooling only | +15 to +25 °C | ₹18,375 |
| 80 mm | Fruit and vegetable, ripening, ante room | +8 to +15 °C | ₹23,625 |
| 100 mm | Chiller, fresh meat, pharma, floriculture, egg | −1 to +8 °C | ₹31,080 |
| 120 mm | Frozen storage | −18 to −25 °C | ₹33,810 |
| 150 mm | Deep freezer, blast freezer | −25 to −40 °C | ₹38,745 |
Matching matters because the door is the most-opened, most-handled part of the envelope: a door thinner than the wall becomes a cold bridge that sweats outside and frosts around the frame, and on a freezer that ice soon stops the door closing flush. Prices are per door on the HyperCold FY2026-27 rate card, GST extra. Sliding and motorised doors are priced to opening size and drive at survey stage, and final pricing always depends on the site survey. See the door line for your room in the quotation configurator.
Why do freezer doors need heater frames and pressure relief ports?
Below 0 °C three extra features become essential:
- Heated frame (anti-sweat heater): a low-wattage heater wire runs behind the frame and gasket seat. Without it, moisture from outside air freezes the gasket to the frame, the door tears its gasket or will not close, and ice builds on the threshold. Chiller doors near 0 °C also benefit on humid sites.
- Heated threshold: on sliding and floor-level freezer doors, so the bottom seal does not freeze to the floor.
- Pressure relief port: warm air that enters during an opening cools and contracts, pulling the room below atmospheric pressure. The door can then be very hard to open, and panels and joints are stressed; defrost can push pressure the other way. A heated relief valve equalises pressure; an unheated one ices shut.
HyperCold's freezer rooms use electrically heated door frames with controlled heater wire and double-gasket doors. Check the heater wire monthly; a cold spot on the frame is the first sign of failure.
What safety features must a cold room door have?
People do get shut inside cold rooms, so the door must open from inside every time:
- An inside safety release (push knob or push bar) that works even when the outside handle is padlocked
- An emergency alarm button inside, wired to a buzzer or lamp outside
- A light switch with an outside indicator, so staff can see when someone is inside
- An inside release that is clearly marked and visible in the dark
- Inside release, alarm and heater frame included in every maintenance checklist
For freezers, treat the inside release and alarm as non-negotiable; HyperCold's design checklist calls for an emergency push-bar release on every freezer door.
How big should a cold room door be for pallets and forklifts?
Size the door from the widest load and the vehicle, not from a catalogue. For foot traffic with crates, a hinged door of roughly 0.8–1.0 m clear width is typical. For wheeled traffic, a common planning rule is about 300 mm of clear space on each side of the widest load, and the same above the tallest load or the forklift's lowered mast.
| Traffic through the door | Widest load | Suggested clear width | Door type |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hand pallet truck, 1,200 × 1,000 mm pallet on its 1,000 mm side | 1.0 m | about 1.6 m | Sliding or double hinged |
| Same pallet on its 1,200 mm side | 1.2 m | about 1.8 m | Sliding |
| Forklift or stacker with pallet | Truck or load, whichever is wider | Widest + 0.6 m; height = mast or load + 0.3 m | Motorised sliding |
Measure the real load, not the pallet: overhanging cartons, stretch-wrap and leaning stacks make it wider, and a door sized to the bare pallet collects impact damage within months. Plan the floor at the same time: pallet trucks need a flush threshold or a gentle ramp, which is easiest when the insulated floor is recessed into the slab (see floor insulation and site preparation). The frame is also the weakest point for impact damage, so fit bollards or buffer rails on forklift routes.
Do you need a strip curtain or an air curtain?
Both reduce the warm air that rushes in while the main door is open; neither replaces a well-sealed door.
| Option | HyperCold FY2026-27 rate card, GST extra | Where it works best |
|---|---|---|
| PVC strip curtain | ₹8,925 per door | Every door; overlapping strips for pallet and trolley traffic |
| Air curtain | ₹26,250 per unit | High-traffic doors where strips would slow people or get torn |
| Ante room or ante chamber | ₹89,250 per unit | Freezers, humid sites and doors opened many times a day |
HyperCold's energy guide puts the saving at 5–10% for strip curtains and 8–15% for air curtains on high-traffic doors. An ante room works differently — it shrinks the temperature and humidity difference at the door — and HyperCold treats it as mandatory below −20 °C and recommends an air-lock for any door opened 20 or more times a day; see the ante room guide. Replace torn or cloudy strips promptly, because a curtain with gaps does little.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
How do you check whether a cold room door gasket is sealing?
Close the door on a sheet of paper at several points around the frame; it should be held firmly everywhere. HyperCold's maintenance schedule washes gaskets weekly and replaces them once compression set exceeds about 25%.
Which way should a cold room door open?
Hinged doors should open outward, so a person inside can push out and the leaf does not take up storage space. A sliding door needs clear wall space beside the opening at least as wide as the door.
Can a cold room door have a lock?
Yes, a padlock hasp or key lock can protect stock, but the inside safety release must still open the door when it is locked from outside.
Can I fit a glass vision panel in a cold room door?
Yes, and it lets staff check the room without opening the door. On freezer doors it must be heated glass, or it fogs and frosts over.
Is a motorised sliding door worth the extra cost?
It pays where forklifts pass many times a shift, because it stays open only as long as needed and closes every time. For a walk-in opened a few times a day, a well-fitted hinged door with a strip curtain is usually enough.
