Cold Rooms for Cut Flowers & Floriculture Export
India's cut-flower exports (rose, carnation, gerbera, orchid) are growing rapidly with Bangalore, Pune, and Sikkim leading. Cold chain quality directly determines vase life and export price. HyperCold builds pre-cooling and storage rooms calibrated to floriculture standards — sub-±0.5°C control, 95% RH humidification.
Temperate flowers 0–2°C • Tropical (anthurium, orchid) 7–10°C
95% RH
Roses 1–2 weeks • Carnation 3–4 weeks • Orchid 1–2 weeks
Common Use Cases
- Field-side pre-cooling room (-1 to +1°C, forced air)
- Wet-pack bulk storage room
- Dry-pack export box storage
- Auction holding room
- Reefer truck pre-load chamber
- Flower bunch grading room +10°C
Engineering Details
Why pre-cooling is critical
Roses harvested at 25°C field temperature lose 1 day of vase life per hour delay in pre-cooling. Target: down to 2°C within 4 hours of harvest. Forced-air pre-cooler with high airflow (4× cold room air rate) achieves this in 2–3 hours; passive cold room takes 8–12 hours.
Humidity control
Flowers transpire continuously — without 95% RH, petals lose moisture and wilt. Ultrasonic or atomising humidifiers (NOT pan humidifiers) deliver fine droplets that absorb into air without wetting surfaces. Drainage channels along walls to handle condensation.
Wet-pack vs dry-pack
Wet-pack: flowers in water-filled vases or buckets — for short-haul domestic transport. Dry-pack: flowers in lined boxes at 0–2°C — for export air freight. Different storage configurations: wet-pack rooms have bucket racks with drip drainage, dry-pack rooms have pallet-rack layout.
Ethylene management
Many cut flowers (especially carnation, alstroemeria) are highly ethylene-sensitive. NEVER store flowers in same chamber as fruits. Treat flowers with STS (silver thiosulfate) at packing to block ethylene receptors. Ethylene-absorbing filters in air handler add 30% to vase life on long export shipments.
Capacity Range
From 200 m³ field pre-cooler (~₹8 lakh) to 50 MT export-grade flower hub (~₹85 lakh).
FAQs
Can the same room handle roses and orchids?
No — orchids are tropical, damaged below 7°C. Use separate chambers with independent controls.
How long can flowers stay in a cold room before quality loss?
Roses 7–10 days at 0–2°C with proper humidity. Each break in cold chain at packing or transport reduces this.
